Marie Vaňková’s project at The Angus McIntosh Centre for Historical Linguistics Newsletter

We are excited to share AMC-affiliate Marie Vaňková’s (Charles University, Prague) LAEME spelling database project, which will provide a tool for analyses of early Middle English texts, focusing primarily on spelling and its variation in space and time. It comprises a database created from LAEME tagged texts alongside a custom-built interface.

Structurally similar to the FITS Project’s database, the tool focuses on graphemes, which are the starting point for querying various aspects of the data. The interface also includes experimental network visualisations of letter alternations in a single spelling system or across two spelling systems, as well as mapping capabilities. The tool is currently at the testing stage of development.
