examination type: two-round assessment
1st round – written test (max. 50 points, 90 minutes)
The applicant undertakes a linguistic analysis of an English text to demonstrate:
a knowledge of the morphological description of word classes
the ability to syntactically analyze simple and multiple sentences
an understanding of the basic principles of word formation and lexical semantics
a general awareness of the history of the English language
a knowledge of the Czech functional description of the grammatical system and relevantgrammatical categories
2nd round – interview (max. 50 points)
1. Assessment of the applicant’s motivation for studying English language and linguistics (The applicant is expected to demonstrate a keen interest in the English language and linguistics and to give a general outline of his/her plans for employment after graduation.
2. Assessment of the applicant’s language skills and knowledge of the English grammar system
The applicant is expected to demonstrate strong language skills including an appropriate command of academic English, both written and spoken, and knowledge of linguistic terminology. Grammar and other linguistic knowledge is expected to correspond to that possessed on completion of a BA degree in English linguistics at a major Czech university.

No certificate of English proficiency is required.
The language of tuition (and of communication within the Department and the Faculty) is English. An elementary knowledge of Czech is highly recommended, however, since the local approach to English language and linguistics is often contrastive, based on comparison of English and Czech. Students may also be required to read some secondary literature in Czech.
English Language and Linguistics graduate profile
The graduate of this programme will have acquired a sound mastery of both practical and specialized English as utilized in philology and in other disciplines within the humanities, and will possess a comprehensive knowledge of the theory, methodology and practical applications of English linguistics. He or she will have a wide range of employment opportunities in all areas where an excellent knowledge of English and an open and informed attitude and all-round versatility are required. The most promising of our graduates continue their studies in postgraduate programmes in the Czech Republic and abroad.
